It first appeared as graffiti on a wall in East London and the true identity of the artist has never 10 been revealed. When a framed painting of Girl with Balloon came up for auction at the famous auction house, Sotheby's in London, it sold for £1.04 million. But then something extraordinary happened shortly after it was 15 sold, the painting began to pass through a shredder hidden in the frame. Banksy posted an image on Instagram of the shredded painting, saying that he'd secretly built a shredder into the frame of the painting 20 in case it ever came up for auction. The auction house refused to reveal the identity of the buyer who successfully bid for the artwork, but suggested that the media attention would increase the value of the 25 painting. This is now part of art history in its shredded state and we'd estimate Banksy has added a minimum fifty percent to its value.
